This month is Brain & Kidney Awareness Month! Pe This month is Brain & Kidney Awareness Month! People of any age can suffer from neurological conditions, often debilitating and sometimes deadly. Here in New Zealand, we celebrate Brain Awareness Month to help highlight these conditions and the importance of funding research today that will save lives tomorrow. Most of us have seen first-hand the devastating effects of age and disease on the brain and memory, and while there is no cure for Alzheimer’s the great news is that getting older doesn’t have to go hand in hand with memory loss. Research now shows that the human brain is growing and changing throughout our lives, and we can control three of the four causes of brain aging in just a few minutes a day. It’s the perfect time for us all to stop and think about what we’re doing to look after our memory and all-round brain health. March is also National Kidney Month, and Organ Donation New Zealand together with Kidney Health New Zealand have joined forces to help raise awareness about the importance of kidney donation and encourage more New Zealanders to have a conversation about organ donation. Organ donation that occurs after someone has died is only possible in a small proportion of all deaths in New Zealand. However, when donation can occur, one donor has the potential to help up to ten people through the donation of organs and tissues. There is no better time than right now to spark a conversation about organ donation and the impact that this could have on someone dependent on kidney dialysis or in need of a transplant.
