Mānawatia a Matariki — Happy Māori New Year!

This month before Matariki approached, the Dove Team was delighted to celebrate the completion of the newly developed Native Garden out in front of Dove House.

This was an idea developed by Stephanie and Iain from the St Andrews Village Gardening Team. Historically, the stars of Matariki were also closely tied to planting and harvesting, so we thought returning native plants to the whenua seemed an appropriate way to celebrate Matariki — the stars of the Pleiades cluster signify things connected to our environment and the health and wellbeing of people.

We met together and thanked the team of gardeners, Mike offered a blessing and Lesley recited a poem by Gunilla Norris, a gardener poet. We finished the blessing with a cuppa and some kai. We’re looking forward to seeing our plants bloom, grow and evolve, enjoyed by our native birds!

Matariki is a time to come together and celebrate, acknowledge the past, and look ahead to what the new year will bring. Let us enjoy this time of reflection and remember those in our lives, both here and those who have passed, whom we are grateful for.

“What I like about volunteering here is meeting lovely customers and how there is a mixture of people you meet… And here in Panmure, it’s like a big family! Volunteering to me is just a part of my life.”

Cheryl has been a volunteer for us for many years at our Panmure store, helping out once a week. She's known to be fun, caring, hardworking, and always goes out of her way to help customers.

"I had retired and I was looking for somewhere to go. So, I had friends who had been through Dove Hospice and a friend of my daughter's who was down at the Dove House for a while—she passed away at 34 from cancer. I thought if I was going to volunteer somewhere, it would be for Dove. That was the reason why I started volunteering here. It's such a good cause, so I'm more than happy to come in and do my 4 hours every week. I look forward to being with the team every Tuesday and helping. It's what it's all about."

Our dedicated volunteer, Peter, has been a volunteer for us for 4 years. He is known to be funny and intelligent, with a lot of great stories to share! Thank you Peter for giving your time and effort here at Dove, we're grateful that we were there for your friend's daughter through her journey with cancer.

National Volunteer Week 19-25 June 2022 honours th

National Volunteer Week 19-25 June 2022 honours the collective energies and mana of all our volunteers in Aotearoa.

This Te Wiki Tūao ā-Motu / National Volunteer week, the theme is ‘Time to Shine / He wā pīataata.’ Let’s take the time to reflect / whaiwhakaaro on all those who give mahi aroha / volunteer for their communities. It’s a time to recognise and celebrate volunteers, a time to shine / pīataata. It’s Matariki, a new year and a fresh start; a time to dream / moemoeā and make plans for the future.

Covid-19 has put a spotlight on the voluntary sector. It highlighted the sector’s vital contribution to unity, kindness, and the wellbeing of New Zealanders. It mobilised younger people to fill in when vulnerable volunteers had to stand down. It saw whānau and friends uniting behind things that mattered most to them. Now let’s recognise and celebrate all that volunteers do to connect communities.

This year, National Volunteer Week coincides with the new public holiday for Matariki (24 June). Matariki is the time many Māori and an ever-growing number of Tauiwi in Aotearoa and around the world gather family and friends and reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and plan for the future.

Throughout the week, we'll be featuring a few of our amazing dove volunteers and telling their stories.

We cannot thank our volunteers enough for all the generous time and work they have dedicated to our organisation. We're incredibly grateful for all the difference they have made and they will forever be invaluable to us.
