Since Dove Hospice & Wellness receives no direct government support, our services are funded by our Dove Hospice Shops, fundraising, donations, grants, bequests, and the generosity of our many volunteers and community partnerships.

“I’ve been working for Dove Hospice as a volunteer and a manager for many, many years. I think that the cause is absolutely amazing because it differs from the normal hospices in that it treats people that are still functioning.

Two of my good friends have had treatments at Dove House with the therapists, I’ve referred numerous people and I’ve been offered services there too. I like the counselling side of it and how it also gives people the opportunity to interact with other people while they have treatment— that I find, is what really draws me to this organisation.”

Birgit has been our loyal staff and volunteer now for 12 years. She’s currently volunteering to sort our art and jewellery donations at our Distribution Centre, which she’s incredibly passionate about. She’s known to be friendly, bubbly, generous with her time, and has great knowledge of all things preloved.

We’re more than grateful to have people like Birgit help our organisation. Our volunteers are a big part of our support system that assists us in continuing to offer our hospice care services to our community.

Our wonderful multi-talented clinical team of Nurses, Psychotherapists, Body Therapists, Counsellors, and Group Facilitators is what makes Dove Hospice a truly great experience for its patients, their families, and carers.

They ensure that we offer a peaceful environment with a holistic approach to care providing physical, social, emotional and spiritual support to the person with a life-limiting illness, their whānau and loved ones.

This level of care is present throughout all hospices in Aotearoa through their clinical teams — thank you Kathryn for sharing your story and thank you to all hospice staff in New Zealand for your ongoing work providing compassionate care to people with life-threatening illness in our community and their families like Kathryn’s.

“We’re not just a building, it’s wherever we need to be we are.”

Dove Hospice and Wellness operate on the beautiful grounds of St Andrews Retirement Village. It is a long-established, holistic provider of care comprising of Dove House and Dove Wing.

At Dove House, a team of experienced, professional, and caring Nurses, Psychotherapists, Body Therapists and Medical Staff support and empower people on their illness pathway from initial diagnosis onwards.

Dove Wing, our inpatient unit, provides quality Palliative Care for those requiring respite, symptom management, and end-of-life care.

Access to our services has no geographical boundaries. We understand that not all our clients are able to travel for our services, just as many other hospices in Aotearoa. Last year, 90% of people under hospice were cared for in their homes with no admission to a hospice in-patient facility.

“Hospice to me means client-centred care and people getting what they need in the community so that they can end their lives well. I think the earlier that the people can connect with hospice and feel comfortable with it, the better experience of it they can have.

So, it’s good for people to learn not to be afraid of hospice and not to think of hospice meaning “the end of life”. The more we can engage family members and get them to know what it is — then the less apprehension there is and the more we can be more involved with people’s lives and help.”

Support is provided using an Integrated Care Model that is person centred. It supports and enhances any conventional treatments people may be receiving while aiming to promote emotional and spiritual well-being with a strong focus on holistic wellness.

What makes Dove different is how we support people who have a terminal diagnosis and those who expect a full recovery. We also ‘bridge the gap’ that exists between diagnosis and end of life, or between diagnosis, treatment, and wellness.
