On March 23rd this year, Dove Hospice launched e-commerce store http://www.dovehospice.com with the aim to showcase and sell our pre-loved product donations to the world. With strong company values of Affordability, Community and Sustainability, we are passionate to create a shopping experience in our local Auckland shops and online that follows these three pillars.
To welcome you to our first blog we would firstly like to introduce you to Dove Hospice, and to tell you more about our organisation, a registered charitable trust, and what the funds we generate through donations helps to support. We want to tell you the story of Dove Hospice.
Dove Hospice was proudly established in 1992, originally as the Eastern Bays Hospice Trust but renamed as we came to serve wider Auckland communities through our unique day programme at Dove House.
Dove Hospice was founded by a community group as a way to celebrate 150 years since the signing of the ‘Treaty of Waitangi’. Isabella Tedcastle, one of the founding patrons of Dove Hospice and still on our board today, described the beginning of Dove Hospice as being a small office with one table and one phone… and has since expanded to what we see today at Dove House and with three respite rooms at St Andrew’s Village and our eight Dove Hospice Shops and distribution warehouse.
Traditionally, ‘Hospice’ cares for people at the end of life. However, Dove Hospice is different. We support people who have a terminal diagnosis and those who expect a full recovery. We also ‘bridge the gap’ that exists between diagnosis and end of life, or between diagnosis, treatment and wellness. This ‘gap’ can be months, even years, during which time the effects of illness and treatment are life changing. We call this service “The Dove Model of Care”.
So, who can access our services?
People who are living with serious, life-threatening illness.
They may be in treatment, expecting remission or recovery, or their medical treatment may now be limited, and they require additional support. We also offer support for family members and carers.
What do we offer as part of “The Dove Model of Care”?
- Aromatherapy, Oncology Massage, Lymphoedema Therapy, Skin and Nail Therapy
- Relaxation therapies – Reiki, Breathing Works and Yoga
- Therapeutic activities – Art, Music, Journaling and Biography
- Men’s groups
- Counselling – Medical, Psychotherapy and Family Support
- Support groups and information forums for patients and carers including bereavement
- 24 hour respite and end-of-life care in our 3 bed facility the Dove Wing in St Andrew’s Village, Glendowie
These treatments are offered from the moment people are diagnosed with a life threatening illness, and we are very thankful for the support we receive from our communities and local partnerships.
Wondering, how would someone access our services?
Patients or carers can access our services directly or be referred by health care providers, family or friends. Referrals may be made via our online referral form www.dovehospice.org.nz or by contacting Dove House on 09 575 4555.
What is the cost attached to these services?
Due to the support we receive from our local communities and partners, the services we provide are at no cost to patients or their family.
How do we fund our services?… I hear you ask
Dove Hospice receives no direct government support. The services we offer are funded by our Dove Hospice Shops, fundraising, donations, grants and bequests. We rely on the amazing generosity of our many volunteers of which we have over 350 and our community partnerships such as BNI, Rotary Club East Auckland, Regal Drycleaners, Karen Walker, Dream Team Interior Fit-Out and About Time.
This support means we can provide over 5,000 individual treatments and 1,000 inpatient care days every year, with 250 service users in our care at any time, helping and caring for people at varying points on their journey with life threatening illness.

Donations of quality furniture, clothing, jewellery, books, linen and household goods are gratefully accepted in ‘saleable’ condition. Donations can be dropped off to any of our 6 stores or call 09 527 5064 for collection.
